Michael Murnane

Michael was born and raised in Colac, starting his career as an apprentice butcher with the local Coles store. Passionate about his craft, Michael was awarded the 'William Angliss, Country Butchers, Best Practical Butcher" award on his final apprenticeship year. He then went on to manage the Coles meat department for a number of years. After marrying local girl Mandy they travelled Australia, with Michael gaining experience in various butcher shops around the country before settling temporarily to work on Wooleen Station, WA, an outback sheep station. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of their travels. Michael took an interest in the beforehand processing of the animals, gaining valuable insight into the overall process of both sheep and cattle stations. Word quickly got out that there was a 'real butcher' in the area, and he was often 'loaned out' to neighbours, travelling 100s of kms to neighbouring properties, for farmers to fill their own freezers with professionally cut meats.

Michael and family then returned to Colac in 1999, deciding that was where they wanted to settle down with family and friends in a community they loved. In total, Michael has been butchering for over 35 years, and is a true master of his craft.

Mandy Murnane

Mandy is a local girl born in Birregurra and raised in Forrest, growing up in "Turner Drive", named in honour of her grandfather Jack Turner, an Otway Shire President back in the day. Mandy worked in the Colac community before travelling the country with husband Michael and upon returning from travels to raise a family, she has been a member of various local committees such as the secretary of the Colac Basketball Association and a member of the Board at Trinity College Colac. Mandy believes it is important to be actively involved in the local community and give back to those that support local businesses.
Mandy works behind the scenes as the business manager.

Trevor Murnane

Trevor has been a butcher in Colac for over 37 years, 15 of those spent with the family business. He puts his skills to use doing a lot of the hard yakka behind the scenes, and is well known for his award-winning sausages and burgers. Trevor is great at what he does, and is a big part of our expanding private farm processing and packing side of the business. Trevor is an invaluable asset to the team at Murnanes.

Our Team

Michael and Mandy’s children Asha, Denver and Grady are also a huge part of the business, still working at the shop around school and university commitments. We’ve got a great team of friendly casuals from the local area who always bring with them fresh ideas and amazing customer service.

Our Butcher Heritage and experience

As artisan butchers we are proud of our skills. Learning the art of butchery and the cut around muscle and bone, gaining full use of the animal is a science that requires great skill.
As with all skillsets, we are always continuing to expand our knowledge and improve our craft. This is a learned practice that our butchers have been perfecting over 70 years between them.

Award Winning

Colac's most awarded Butcher, we have won numerous awards over the years in the Sausage King competition for our sausages and burgers.
All our sausages and burgers are made on the premises using only the highest quality ingredients. Our sausages are all made by hand and traditionally linked. Highly acclaimed and award winning, they are the best in the west.

Employment

We are of the strong belief that if we employ our local school kids with after school work it will instil a sense of pride of being a part of our great community. We enjoy working with our local secondary schools and welcome Work Experience students.
Our local youth are the future of our wonderful community and helping them develop important skills and connections as they continue to develop is imperative to the growth of our Town and Region
